The Trumbull Youth Association (TYA) will perform Mary Poppins as its 46th annual Summer Musical. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins have entertained Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The shows will take place July 29-Aug. 2 at the Trumbull High School auditorium. The schedule follows:
Wednesday, July 29, 7 p.m., Senior Citizen show, seniors only; no charge
Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31, 8 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 1, 2 and 8 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 2, 2 p.m.
Advance tickets may be purchased at trumbullyouth.org. All seats are $20.
Both Mary and Bert will fly across the stage with Fly by Foy the International Theatrical Staging Company, say the show’s producers.
Brett Boles, whose new musical was recently optioned for an off-Broadway run, has returned to direct this year’s production. The TYA production staff includes musical director David Harris and choreographer Lisa Menilli.
“I love the energy of the kids,” said Boles. “They come here and they face stiff competition in the tryouts and then they rehearse four hours a day every weekday for six weeks and have to learn a professionally written Broadway musical, not to mention the enormous amount of timed choreography that goes into this show.”
TYA has been bringing youth community theatre to Trumbull for 46 years. Every summer more than 70 cast and 30 crew members, ranging in ages from 13-21, work together with theatre professionals, parents and volunteers to provide Trumbull with a full Broadway-style musical.
